How Can You Improve Your Spiritual Life In 2014?

\n

Have you considered the possibility of using your spiritual energy as a driver to live your mission in life in 2014?

\n

This newsletter is the fifth in a series of articles where I provide insights and tips on how you can improve in several elements of your life. If you haven’t done so, read my previous four newsletters in which I provided insights to strengthen your family relationships, accelerate your career progress, and improve your physical and mental health this year.

Spirituality is not a topic commonly covered in the business world, perhaps to avoid offending others who have different religious beliefs. However, my spiritual journey has helped me energize my mission in life so that’s what I’m speaking about in this month’s newsletter. Independent of your own religious beliefs, I hope you find some of these insights and ideas applicable to your personal mission as well. Here are a few suggestions to consider in 2014:

Assign a higher priority to nurturing your spirit. My spiritual development, together with my physical and mental health, forms part of the “trilogy” that energizes me to achieve my mission in life. In particular, it enables me to continuously develop the core values I have chosen to live by, such as family, integrity, and serving others, to mention a few. I cannot see myself attempting to succeed in life without a healthy body, mind, and spirit.

How can you nurture your spirit? One way is by extrapolating some of the principles of a healthy diet:

Learn from the experts about the best spiritual diets. Two recent examples for me were Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II, both of whom were recently canonized by the Catholic Church. Two movies on YouTube not only gave me an excellent biographic perspective on their lives, but also became a strong source of inspiration and motivation.

Feed good food to your soul, and avoid “junk” spiritual food. Check if the messages you receive and the people you socialize with are moving your values in the right direction. Challenge yourself to become 100 percent accountable for what type of food you allow to feed your spirit.

Feed your soul frequently. I have realized that to accomplish my personal mission, I have to move away from a minimalist mentality. Rather than looking for the minimum I can do to develop my spirit, I am trying to stretch myself into constantly and proactively feeding my soul.

Commit to a plan. What is the one thing you will do differently during 2014 to enhance your spiritual health? Consider setting a goal to improve a core value in your life. Determine if and how any of the suggestions mentioned above can help you achieve this goal. In my case, a key role model for me continues to be my father (RIP), who nurtured his spirit through reading the bible and attending mass every day, and who lived a life of service to others, regardless of whether they could pay him back. Whatever you decide to do (e.g., pray daily), I suggest you write it down and place a reminder on your smartphone or in another visible place.

I want to close this newsletter with a quote from the French Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, which has also been attributed to the author Stephen R. Covey: “We are not human beings on a spiritual journey. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.” As you embark on this journey, count on me to help you succeed.
